Stanisław DuninBorkowski and his views on Einstein’s special theory of relativity.Jacek Rodzeń - 2022 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 72:63-86.
The main purpose of this article is to discuss the views of the Jesuit Stanisław DuninBorkowski (1864–1934) about Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. These days, DuninBorkowski is a rather obscure figure despite rising to fame in the interwar period as an outstanding expert in the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Thus, the secondary aim of this article is to remind ourselves of this somewhat forgotten scholar. As a researcher, writer, and pedagogue, DuninBorkowski was interested in (...)

Probleme der Interpretation von Literatur: Ein Überblick.Stefan Descher, Jan Borkowski, Felicitas Ferder & Philipp David Heine - 2015 - In Jan Borkowski, Stefan Descher, Felicitas Ferder & Philipp David Heine (eds.), Literatur interpretieren: Interdisziplinäre Beiträge zur Theorie und Praxis. Mentis. pp. 11-70.

    Prolegomena to a theory of X-marking.Kai von Fintel & Sabine Iatridou - 2023 - Linguistics and Philosophy 46 (6):1467-1510.
The morphological marking that distinguishes conditionals that are called “counterfactual” from those that are not, can also be found in other modal constructions, such as in the expression of wishes and oughts. We propose to call it “X-marking”. In this article, we lay out desiderata for a successful theory of X-marking and make some initial informal observations. Much remains to be done.

Justifying Why Individuals Should Reduce Personal Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Developing the Argument of Integrity.Kathrin von Allmen - 2024 - The Journal of Ethics 28 (1):77-99.
Humans ought to do much more in order to remedy the severe harm caused by climate change. While there seems to be an overall consensus that governments and other national and international political agents need to resolve the problem, there is no agreement yet on the role and responsibility of individuals in this process. In this paper, I suggest an argument of integrity that offers strong pro tanto moral reasons for individuals to reduce their personal greenhouse gas emissions. Hourdequin (2010) (...)

Decentering Humanism in Philosophy and the Sciences: Ecologies of Agency, Subversive Animism, and Diffractional Knowledge.Kocku von Stuckrad - 2023 - Sophia 62 (4):709-722.
The idea that humans are clearly distinguished from other animals and from the natural world in general is a cornerstone of European philosophy and culture at least from the sixteenth century onward. Often, this idea is related to understandings of ‘humanism’ that emerged in that period and legitimized regimes of power and control over non-European cultures; it also sanctioned the exploitation of the natural world in the form of extractive capitalism. Critiques of Eurocentric mindsets hinge on certain understandings of ‘humanism,’ (...)

  25. Non-probabilistic Causation without Necessitation.Daniel Von Wachter - manuscript
This article introduces the notion of the directedness of a process, which underlies event causation as well as the persistence of things. Using this notion it investigates what happens in typical cases of active event causation. Causes never necessitate their effects because even non- probabilistic causes can be counteracted.

Bridging the gap: Dynamics as a unified view of cognition.Derek Harter, Arthur C. Graesser & Stan Franklin - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (1):45-46.
Top-down dynamical models of cognitive processes, such as the one presented by Thelen et al., are important pieces in understanding the development of cognitive abilities in humans and biological organisms. Unlike standard symbolic computational approaches to cognition, such dynamical models offer the hope that they can be connected with more bottom-up, neurologically inspired dynamical models to provide a complete view of cognition at all levels. We raise some questions about the details of their simulation and about potential limitations of top-down (...)

    Professional Ethics: A Managerial Opportunity in Emerging Organizations.Heidi von Weltzien Hoivik - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 39 (1/2):3 - 11.
Professional Ethics, viewed as a managerial challenge and opportunity in this study, deals with the often overlooked conceptions, actions and behavior of individuals who see themselves both as members of a profession and as members of an organization. Managers have to deal with this dual loyalty and inherent potential for conflict. This is of particular importance for new types of organizations when wanting to develop and sustain an ethical platform for the ultimate goal - assuring that future business decisions of (...)

    The Nature of Love.Dietrich Von Hildebrand - 2009 - St. Augustine's Press.
Early on Dietrich von Hildebrand distinguished himself as a thinker with an unusual understanding of human love. His books in the 1920s on man and woman broke new ground and stirred up fruitful controversy. Toward the end of his life he wrote a foundational book on love, The Nature of Love. He had in fact been preparing all his life to write this work; he was so drawn to the philosophical analysis of love that his students long ago had dubbed (...)

Humans and animals interact frequently, although the degrees of freedom as well as the consequences are distributed rather unevenly in these interactions. The language of game theory allows to study such interactions systematically. However, while game theory has become increasingly influential in moral and political philosophy, it has done so within a purely anthropocentric framework. Either, it focused on interaction between humans alone, or it treated animals as mere instruments to human welfare. This article argues that a physiocentric extension of (...)

This article opens with the consequentialist–deontologist debate, with the former concerned about the relevance of punitive measures against their crime reducing potentials, while the latter highlights punishment as censure of wrongful acts and the proportion of the punishment to the degree of crime. The article briefly discusses the empirical research on the impact of penal sanctions and focuses on three main kinds of empirical research into possible general deterrent effects—namely, association studies, quasi-experimental studies, and contextual and perceptual studies. It addresses (...)

    Tycho brahes elixier.Von Karin Figala - 1972 - Annals of Science 28 (2):139-176.
In the history of science the ‘Elixir Tychonis’ was rather neglected till today. This elixir consists of three prescriptions. The first was published in Cista medica by Thomas Bartholinus, the third in the biography of Brahe written by Gassendi . The famous edition of Opera omnia Brahei by Dreyer contains the three prescriptions in the Vol. IX; Dreyer used only the manuscript Langebekiana Nr. 179 under consideration of the printed texts differing from the manuscript. The discovery of the probable unknown (...)

Embodied Intelligence: Smooth Coping in the Learning Intelligent Decision Agent Cognitive Architecture.Christian Kronsted, Sean Kugele, Zachariah A. Neemeh, Kevin J. Ryan & Stan Franklin - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Much of our everyday, embodied action comes in the form of smooth coping. Smooth coping is skillful action that has become habituated and ingrained, generally placing less stress on cognitive load than considered and deliberative thought and action. When performed with skill and expertise, walking, driving, skiing, musical performances, and short-order cooking are all examples of the phenomenon. Smooth coping is characterized by its rapidity and relative lack of reflection, both being hallmarks of automatization. Deliberative and reflective actions provide the (...)

  42. The Personality of Max Scheler.Dietrich von Hildebrand - 2005 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 79 (1):45-55.
Dietrich von Hildebrand, a close friend of Max Scheler since 1907, wrote this assessment of Scheler’s personality and philosophical style in 1928, just months after Scheler’s death. (Dietrich von Hildebrand, “Max Scheler als Persönlichkeit,” Hochland 26, no. 1 [1928/29]: 70–80.) He explores the extraordinarily rich lived contact with being out of which Scheler philosophized. At the same time he acknowledges the lack of philosophical rigor in many of Scheler’s analyses. He brings out the restlessness of Scheler’s mind and person that (...)
